The Republican Budget Threatens Americans Who Rely on Medicaid

More than 16,000 kids in area schools could be at risk of losing free breakfast and lunch under proposed budget cuts at the federal level. But that’s just the beginning.

The Republican budget proposal is not just an accounting document,it’s a declaration of priorities. And in this case, it’s clear who is being left behind: working families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities who rely on Medicaid and other essential programs to survive and thrive.

Medicaid isn’t just a lifeline for low-income families. It covers nearly half of all births in the United States. It pays for home health care that allows aging parents to stay out of nursing homes. It funds critical services for children with special needs. When Republicans threaten these programs, they are threatening the health and dignity of our neighbors, our elders, and our future.

Meanwhile, the same budget that proposes cuts to school meals and health care offers more tax breaks for the wealthy and large corporations. It’s a cruel contrast, asking those with the least to sacrifice the most, while those with the most give up nothing at all.

We must be clear-eyed about what this means. Cutting Medicaid and school nutrition programs won’t balance the budget—but it will cause real harm. Kids will go hungry. Families will lose coverage. Vulnerable Americans will be left to fend for themselves in a system already stacked against them.

We deserve better. Our communities deserve leaders who invest in people, not just profits. And we must stand together to stop these cuts before they cause irreversible harm.
